Objective

To help staff quickly and accurately locate provider information required for billing, claims, and patient care coordination.

Steps to Perform NPI Search

  1. Navigate to NPI Search

    • Go to the left navigation menu.

    • Select Providers > NPI.

  2. Choose Enumeration Type

    • Select from the dropdown.

    • Example: NPI-2 (organization provider).

  3. Enter Taxonomy Description (Optional)

    • Add a specialty or description to narrow down the search.

    • Example: Orthopaedic Surgery.

  4. Select Address Purpose

    • From the dropdown, choose the type of address (e.g., Location).

  5. Enter Location Details (Optional)

    • City – Type the city name (e.g., Miami).

    • State – Enter the 2-letter state code (e.g., FL).

    • Postal Code – Enter the zip code (e.g., 33020).

  6. Submit Search

    • Click the Submit button.

    • The system will display results based on the criteria entered.

Tips for Efficiency

  • Use NPI number directly when available to save time.

  • If unsure of the provider name, use taxonomy and city/state filters to narrow results.

  • Combine taxonomy + postal code for the most accurate searches.

  • Keep frequently used taxonomies (e.g., Orthopaedic Surgery, Physical Therapy) handy to copy-paste.

Important Notes

  • Fields marked with red asterisks (*) are required.

  • Ensure State is always entered as a 2-letter abbreviation (e.g., CA not California).

  • Results depend on the accuracy of information in the NPI Registry; mismatched data may return incomplete results.

  • Use Submit only after double-checking criteria to avoid unnecessary reloads.
